How To Seat Baby In Your Car Safely
Hi moms! Here you can find the different types of seats for your little one.
There are different types depending on the age and size of your child.
Laws Vary
Laws vary by state so make sure to find out the law in yours. Most laws
require kids under twelve to be seated in the rear. If there’s a crash, the
airbags in front may injure us.
Must Face To The Rear
Babies under 1-year-old should have their seats facing to the rear.
After their first birthday and they weigh at least 20 pounds, many say
they can face to the front. I still face to the rear, even though I’m 21
pounds. Mom found info that says it’s safer to keep us facing to the
back longer.
Until we outgrow the seat. With our law, it’s 36″ or 35 pounds. Whichever
we come to first. Usually, between 2 and 3 years old.
Convertible Seat
It’s best to buy a seat that can be used both ways. They’re called
convertible seats. They should have a 5 point harness for when
your child faces forward.
Booster
Once she has reached 4 and is at least 40 pounds, you can switch
to a booster seat. After they grow to at least 4’9″ tall, they can
usually use the adult seat belt.
Typically, they will be 10 or 11. Some kids though are only 8 or 9 when
reaching that height.
Adult Belts
The lap belt should fit across the hips and not the tummy.
The shoulder straps should go across the shoulder and not her neck.
Installing
It may be best to have a professional install them. We have three. Two
backward and one forward. If you install be sure to follow the
makers’ instructions carefully.
2nd Hand
If you buy yours used, make sure it wasn’t involved in a crash!
Examine all the belts for tearing, all bolts for fractures, and also the
cushioning of the seat.
You want to ensure it is not torn. It’s probably best to only buy used
from those you know and trust, to be safe. Like your family or friends.
What Type For Your Car
It is necessary to understand what kind of seat will fit in your car. A
dealer should be able to tell you. Your car manual might explain also.
Be sure to get one installed before your baby’s birth. He will need it
coming home from the hospital!
