How To Treat Diaper Rash Naturally

by | Nov 20, 2019

Hi moms!  I want to talk today about diaper rash.

Babies have always needed to use diapers, whether cloth or disposable,
to meet their basic needs. What would moms do without them!

Parents put diapers on us, so we can stay dry and comfortable for a few
hours.

Usually, most babies who wear diapers suffer skin rashes. This problem
is known as a diaper rash.

We’ll talk about the symptoms, causes and treatment. Also, how to
prevent a rash and what
products to avoid using.

We’ll also mention some natural remedies.

What is a diaper rash?

It is a very common condition that occurs on the skin of babies due to a
number of reasons.

This rash can inflame the diaper skin area and appear red, scaly, and
often painful.

That is one of the most common problems babies suffer, and usually,
there should be no cause for concern since it is not a severe irritation
and usually disappears on its own over time.

Symptoms

*Irritation in the diaper area (buttocks, genitals, and thighs) with red,
dry, and flaky skin.

*More severe and painful rashes in areas of red skin with some
bleeding.

*Baby discomfort when changing the diaper.

*Crying and complaint of the baby when touching or washing the
affected area.

*Itching in several parts of the diaper area.

*Baby has discomfort while sleeping.

*If the Diaper rash is severe, baby may have a fever or rashes
throughout the body.

Causes

A baby’s skin is susceptible, and anything that can cause irritation can
affect it:

*Irritation due to constant contact with poo and urine for an extended
time. Diarrhea is one of the most common causes.

*The use of soaps can also cause dryness and irritation since baby’s skin
is very delicate.

*Ammonia can cause skin irritation and rash. The combination of
urine and poo can produce it.

*The rashes may appear due to the rubbing of tight and wet diapers with
baby’s skin.

*Fungal infection (yeasts) produced by rashes or humid and warm areas.
They usually have a fleshy red color and with hives.

*Sudden changes in the baby’s diet.

*The rashes may appear due to an allergic reaction from the use of soap,
wet wipes, lotions, or detergent.

*Misuse of antibiotics.

Prevention and treatment

*The most important thing is to change diapers regularly to prevent baby
from staying with their waste for prolonged periods.

*Wash baby’s genitals and buttocks carefully with warm water after he
urinates or poos.

*Before placing a new diaper, let the baby’s skin be exposed to the air to
cool.

*Place an ointment (zinc oxide or vaseline) during each diaper change.
That will avoid any skin irritation.

*Place a new diaper on without squeezing it too much. The idea is that
baby feels comfy.

*Use diapers of a top brand to keep baby’s skin dry at all times.

*Change laundry detergent if you suspect it might be the soap.

What To Avoid Using

Fragrant Items

You should avoid fragrance products like fabric softeners.

Baby Powder

Also, some say not to use baby powder on baby as that can be bad for
baby’s lungs if she inhales it.

Corn Starch

Another product not to use is cornstarch. If baby’s rash is caused by the
fungus
Candida, that can make it worse. It can also be bad for baby’s
lungs if inhaled.

Natural Remedies

Breast Milk?

Some moms have tried breast milk which has a lot of antibodies and
anti-infective properties.

“I will sometimes tell parents to use a bit of breast milk on a diaper rash,”
shares Dr. Catherine Gritchen, pediatrician at Memorial Care Medical
Group in Long Beach, California.

“Though there is not clear evidence that this would always be helpful,
there
is certainly no harm in this practice.

Breast milk has many amazing biodynamic properties, as well as natural
anti-infective properties and is full
of antibodies.”    care.com

Apple Cider Vinegar

Many moms use apple cider vinegar. According to clean chef messy mom
you can pour a cup of it into baby’s bath water.

Also ” Not only will the apple cider vinegar kill bacteria that could worsen
the
rash, it will also kill off yeast that is prone to cause a rash!

You can also dilute a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in a cup of water
and wash your baby’s bottom with it each time you do a diaper change.

If you use this method, don’t forget the dilute part!

Olive Oil

Olive oil has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory qualities. Many moms
rub a few drops on their little ones rash.

Coconut Oil

Many moms swear by coconut oil. It is antifungal and can help moisturize
baby’s skin.

“Coconut oil is a fantastic moisture barrier choice. Clean and dry your
baby after a diaper change, and then gently massage a small amount of
coconut oil into his skin.”

“Keep in mind that any cream or oil that you use will be difficult to get out
of
cloth diapers. Use disposable diapers (or a liner in your cloth diapers)
when
treating a diaper rash with creams or oils.”

Also, getting any oils directly on cloth diapers might cause them to
not be as
absorbable.

Usually, diaper rash does not require a doctor.

But in cases where the outbreak does not go away, it can be a slightly
more serious problem, and it
is essential to see a baby doctor.

The doctor will recommend the best ointments and methods to treat that
condition.

OK moms, have a great day!
