Starting Baby On Avocados
Hi moms! Today I want to talk to you about feeding baby avocados.
Mom gave me a taste last week for the first time and I loved it.
I did some research about the benefits of avocados and was
surprised at what I found. I totally wish mom started me on it a long
time ago!
We’ll talk about the ways to choose and prepare it. And for sure the
benefits baby will experience when eating the avocado.
Choosing An Avocado
Fresh avocados are the best for baby’s feeding diet. If you want to
use them in the next day or two, always choose the ones that have
a firm texture when you squeeze them.
It may range from dark green to dark purple, or even black.
If it is hard, it’s usually not ripe and will turn grainy when pureed.
A squishy avocado can get bad if not eaten right away.
If you want to get a hard one and let it ripen at home, choose one
that is green. Place it in a brown paper bag.
Close it and keep at room temperature. It will produce ethylene
gas. The gas helps ripen the avocado.
“Add a banana, apple, or tomato to the brown paper bag. Bananas
are best, but the other fruits will do it, too.
Some prefer using an apple because it can be used over and over
again, even after it becomes old and wrinkly – it still emits gas.
[2] If you have none of these, but another avocado or two, put
them all together.” wikihow.com
Once ripe, you can store it in the refrigerator for about a
week. You can also freeze them after making puree and they will
keep about a month.
Just add a couple drops of lemon juice and store in a covered
container.
“Don’t freeze avocado if you have mixed the puree with
previously frozen breast milk.
And don’t try to freeze whole or sliced avocado if it is to be used
in a recipe where a more ‘solid’ texture is required.
Thawed ‘pieces’ of avocado can be very mushy in texture –
there’s really no substitute for fresh in this case.”

Preparing For Baby
First, lengthwise, slice the avocado down the middle. Then twist
till half of the avocado separates. Grab a spoon to squeeze out
the pit.
Cut the avocado pieces lengthwise down to the skin and keep in
mind to peel the skin back. Use a spoon to get the food from the
avocado.
Mash the Avocado
You can use a food processor or blender to mash the avocado
until it becomes smooth. To reach the desired consistency you
should add some water as needed.
For additional creaminess, use your breast milk to puree the
avocado or formula rather than water.
Chunkier avocados are suited for the baby who is 10 months
and above. You should consider using a fork to mash it rather
than pureeing it.
Avocado Puree
Avocados are favorite foods among babies. You can mix them
together with sweet banana puree that yields some powerful food
rich in omega-3 as well as potassium.
Prior to introducing your young one to solid foods, you should
first consult your pediatrician. This is usually the case when your
baby is prone to allergies.
Nutritional Benefits
First Food
Baby doctors also prefer moms give baby green vegetables as their
first food.
This is because the sweeter fruit, if given first, may make baby not
like vegetables later. They may only want sweet food.
The good thing with avocados though, is that they have surpassed
the green veggie standards even though they are a fruit.
Avocados are rich in nutrients and their mild flavor and creamy
texture make the perfect first food for babies. The creaminess and
soft texture make it easy for baby to digest.
You can start feeding your baby avocado once he gets 4-6
months old. The time baby is ready for solid food.
The good thing with avocado is that it doesn’t require any recipe
since no cooking is involved. The recipe is fast, simple to make and
your child will be pleased with it.
Also, another advantage of avocado baby food is that you can
prepare it prior to the feeding time.
Nutrients
Avocados offer a lot of nutritional benefits. They have become
known as nature’s perfect food. Avocados tend to have more
nutritional value when compared to other fruits.
It’s rich in protein, fiber, zinc, folic acid, vitamins, and other
nutrients.
Avocados are also rich in fat, but it’s a very beneficial type of fat. It
is good for heart health, monounsaturated and has good (HDL)
cholesterol.
You should not be afraid of feeding your baby avocados
because of the fat they contain as it has shown to be beneficial
to the health of the growing baby.
Brain Food
Another good thing with avocados is that they are rich in omega-3
fatty acids that enhance the development of babies’ brain and
that is why they are recommended for growing babies.
Foods that are rich in omega-3 are the first foods you should
consider when introducing your baby to solid foods for the first time.
Avocados have a buttery, creamy texture that is not difficult for young
ones to mash between our gums.
Their flavor is very mild and they lack a thin skin that can end up
choking babies.
Healthy Fats
While some people are anxious when they come across the word fat,
they should remember that each creature requires fat including
babies.
Fat can enhance the development of a better brain for us munchkins.
I’m not talking about refined oils or hydrogenated fat but on healthy
fat originating from an avocado. An avocado is rich in healthy fats
that are needed in the development of the brain.
Generally, the development of brain cells result from fat. Balance in
these components can enhance your baby’s intelligence since it
makes up the brain development blocks.
Food resulting from avocado builds an intelligent and healthy
brain, particularly during the brain development stages.
Babies need lots of fat for growth and development especially when
they are one to two years old.
Promotes Baby health and Wellness
Avocado has shown to be effective in promoting baby’s health and also
wellness. This is due to its antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-
inflammation properties.
Not only giving the body fundamental nutrients, it can neutralize
and get rid of harmful elements out of baby’s body.
Also, counter the damage resulting from free radicals with the help
of its antioxidant properties.
Avocado also has anti-inflammation properties, which regulate the
inflammation caused by irritable stimuli, pathogens as well as the
damage of tissues.
Avocado is capable of healing wounds, rashes as well as scratches
on the skin. It also has antimicrobial properties that fight
infections resulting from pathogens.
It satisfies the babies hunger
Research has shown that kids lack enough fiber since they are not now
consuming more fruits and vegetables in their diets. The quantity of
fiber kids demand keeps on changing as we grow up.
Avocado is rich in fiber and one ounce is thought to contain close to
two grams. Digestion of fiber takes time and this helps babies not to
feel hungry for quite awhile.
Foods rich in fiber are capable of lowering the risk of cardiovascular
disease, type two diabetes, and obesity also.
Making sure baby has enough fiber daily keeps your baby’s
digestive system on the right track and functioning properly thereby
preventing constipation.
There you have it, moms. All this writing about avocados has made
me want some! Gotta go. Have a great day!
