Baby Development In The First Year

by | Apr 17, 2019

Your Baby’s Development Month by Month

Hi moms!  Today, I want to share with you what you can expect in the
first year after bringing baby home.

I asked mom to give me some pointers, and she said I was pretty
average with what most moms see happen.

So, she wrote down what she experienced with me in my first year.
That saved me a lot of time!

Of course, not all babies grow exactly the same, so your little one may
grow
a little less or more than me.

If so, it doesn’t mean they will keep growing at that rate their whole
childhood. In other words, they may not be under or
overweight always.

OK, here we go!

 FIRST MONTH

Mom said I was either feeding or sleeping all the time, and of course,
crying.
That’s all we need at this stage.

Oh, and of course, cuddles! Mom says my amount of crying decreased
after the second week.
More nap time for mom!

After losing almost a pound, the first few days, my weight stayed the same
for a couple weeks. Then I started growing.

I was breastfed the first 2 weeks and then mom switched me to a bottle.

Mom pumped milk and fed me around 6 or 7 times a day, usually. I took 3
or 4 ounces each time.

I gained a pound and a half and grew about an inch for the whole
month.

Mom felt I started to recognize her voice and sense her presence near the
end of the month.

SECOND MONTH

In my second month, I began to get rounder and chubby. I started to
stick
my tongue out when I wanted milk.

My reflexes started to kick in. When mom gave me a rattle, I would close
my hand around it and not let go.

Mom said when I was feeling fine, my cooing and gurgling increased.

I also started to raise my head easier even though my tummy time was
only about 1 minute a few times a day. I guess I didn’t like it.

In month 2 I gained a little over 1 pound and grew another inch.
Maybe cause mom fed me well. About 5 ounces 5 times a day.

THIRD MONTH

Mom says our bond grew even more during this time. I also began
sleeping
longer at night and started only waking mom two times.

During this month mom laughed one day and I laughed back. My first
laugh! I also started to roll over, so mom had
to be alert.

I started reaching for things to grasp them. When mom picked me up, I
would reach over and grasp her hair hanging down.

The soft spot on the back of my head closed.

In month 3 I gained a pound and a half and grew almost an inch and a
half.
I also started taking in 6 ounces of milk 5 times a day.

FOURTH MONTH

I began to be more active and energetic and started playing.

When on my tummy, I started pushing myself up with my arms. I could also
roll over onto my back.

I started only waking mom once during the night for a feeding.

In month 4 I gained another pound and grew an inch. I started drinking 7
ounces of milk 5 times a day.

FIFTH MONTH

During the 5th month, I started turning my head towards mom when I heard
her coming.

She began playing peek-a-boo.

I started crying more and mom found out I was teething.

She gave me non-toxic teething rings which I still use today. I still have 6
teeth that are trying to grow in.

Mom switched me from my bassinet to a crib. She started sitting me up so
I could get used to balancing upright on my own.

My nap time which was 4 times a day, was reduced to 3 in month 5.

Gradually, mom changed me from breast milk to formula and introduced
me
to solid foods. Pureed veggies, chicken and beef. Also, applesauce.

I gained another pound this month and grew almost 1 more inch. At
the end of the month, I was drinking 7 ounces of formula 5 times a day.

 SIXTH MONTH

I started to grab things mom would give me. I began to move them from
one
hand to the other.

I could roll over on my back and tummy in both directions. Mom said I
started to laugh a lot more when she made faces at me.

I stopped waking mom during the night for a feeding.

I gained almost 1 pound and grew a little over 1/2 inch. This month I
dropped to 6 ounces of formula 5 times a day.

Mom also started feeding me pureed food 2 times a day.

SEVENTH MONTH

This month I did a terrible thing that made mom cry out in pain.

When she was holding me and talking to a friend, I saw her earring
swinging back and forth.

I reached out and grabbed it. I then yanked real hard and tore moms
earlobe through!
Mom said I felt so bad I cried.

Mom first noticed a tooth starting to pop through! It was on the
bottom.

She started placing my rattles a little ways from me on the floor. I started
pushing myself forward to reach them.

Mom said I started crying again in the middle of the night until she
would come in. She said I was afraid of being alone.

She plugged in a night light and turned the lullabies on again. The ones
she played a few months earlier.

Mom says I started to sit up without support for a little bit. Then we started
playing patty cake.

When she started peek-a-boo, I began to figure out where she would pop
out from. I saw her do it a lot over time.

I gained a little over a pound this month and grew another half an inch.

I moved down to 6 ounces of formula 4 times a day now. My pureed
food
increased to 3 times a day.

 EIGHTH MONTH

I started making more noise banging and throwing things I could
grab.

I started pulling myself up to a standing position for a short time.

Mom says she’s pretty sure I stopped waking her during this month. I
guess I stopped being afraid of the mostly dark room.

I said my first word, dada! Mom says when daddy came home, she would
always point to him and say dada to me. I finally caught on!

I gained another pound this month and grew another full inch. I stayed at
6 ounces of formula 4 times a day.

Mom started giving me more of a variety of solid foods. Like spinach
and fish cause they’re rich in iron.

She stopped giving me baby cereal. She read that the FDA may be
allowing too much arsenic in it!

NINTH MONTH

The 9th month was when I began to crawl. Mom had to watch me
closer.

Our home was already childproof though, cause my older sister was
walking
then.

I was also starting to move around when standing, by holding onto
stuff.

Mom says I started understanding her when she said no. I would then
obey.

She said my memory improved. She hid toys in a few places with me
watching.

Then I would crawl over to where she put them and find the toys in the
first couple of places.

By the end of the month, I was remembering where all three or four toys
were.

My naps went down to 2 a day.

I stopped waking mom during the night for a feeding.

I gained just over a half pound this month and grew about one-half inch. I
stayed at 6 ounces of formula 4 times a day and pureed stuff 3 times.

TENTH MONTH

This month I began sitting up for long periods of time. I also started
crawling up and down the stairs.

I began playing with colorful blocks and stacking them.

I gained about a pound and grew almost 1 inch this month. I stayed at 6
ounces of formula 4 times a day with more pureed and
finger foods.

Mom started  adding cooked potatoes and cooked veggies like
green beans as more teeth started growing in.

ELEVENTH MONTH

At this stage, mom says I was able to point to toys she asked me to
identify.

I began to be able to grasp my own cup and drink from it.

I started climbing all over, making mom jittery.

I gained about half a pound and grew about a half inch.

I stayed at 6 ounces of formula, but only 3 times a day with 3 small meals.

Mom started giving me snacks also in the morning between breakfast and
lunch.

TWELFTH MONTH

When mom asked me a question I understood, I started nodding or
shaking
my head no.

I began turning pages in a picture book mom gave me.

I still took 2 naps a day at this stage.

I gained another half a pound and grew an inch this month.

Mom switched me to 4 ounces of milk in a cup 3 times a day. Also more
tablespoons of food 3 times along with snacks 2 times.

There you have it, moms! Your baby may grow less or more than me in
those months. Boys will grow more and gain more than girls.

Their development may increase less or faster than me also. Some things
you want to watch, though.

Ask your baby doctor if you have any concerns. For example, if your
baby still is not sitting up by 12 months.

Ok, mom, I’m on my way. Dinner time!  Have a great day!
